Camera Basics: Composition & Lighting

This workshop will help the filmmaker, documentarian, and photographer understand the ways in which composition & lighting can help communicate ideas to the viewer, along with some technical basics about exposure.

The first part of this workshop covers composition (the placement of elements within the frame) for your video or photo shoot. You’ll also see how light can be used to sculpt depth, add contrast and pattern, direct attention and more. From Film Noir style to the use of ambient lighting in the modern documentary, lighting can affect the mood of your viewers. The second (shorter) part of this workshop, covers the technical basics of proper lighting and exposure in the digital realm, and how you can adjust exposure parameters for various effects. Lecture, overheads, hands-on w/Canon XA-25s, and Q & A.
