Digital Media Workshop - Summer 2018 Session 2

Registration is closed for this event

Digital Media Workshop - Summer 2018 is for teens aged 10-13.

Summary:

Students will develop a short personal non-fiction story, in both audio and visual formats, as well as learn to create a website to showcase their work.  They will develop basic skills in storytelling, recording, photography, video, and website creation. Students will be expected to carry out some work in between sessions.

Full Description:

Today’s media world requires a variety of skills to navigate. The ability to connect and communicate with others using digital tools creates opportunities for work, family, and community service.

In this workshop, students will first develop a short, non-fiction story about something that has personal meaning to the student.  They will then learn to turn this story into an audio piece such as might be heard on the radio segment or a podcast.

In the next step, students will learn basic photography skills and collect imagery and short video snippets, in order to create a short slideshow/video, using their audio work as the base soundtrack. They will learn how visuals can enhance or even replace portions of their audio, and further deepen their storytelling.

Finally, students, will be taught how to create a basic website (using various free services) to showcase and promote their work.  Here they can add additional written work and photos to enhance their presentation.

Although students will receive some exposure to more professional level tools, such as Canon cameras, various microphones, Final Cut Pro X, etc., the primary tools will be student cell phones and DMA’s iPads.  This is to emphasize that they can create quality work without fancy gear, if they understand how to use what they possess already.  The most important lessons will revolve around the crafting and telling of their story, rather than what the “best” gear or software is.

The workshop is lead by DMA staffer Alex Silva-Sadder, with assistance from a high school intern, who has completed all our other youth workshops.
