DMA takes June orientation 'on location'
Davis Media Access (DMA) offers a free orientation to its programs and services each month. Generally held at DMA's studios on Fifth Street, this month's orientation will take place Wed., June 13 from 7-8:30 p.m., at the Davis branch of the Yolo Public Library.

DMA is the non-profit community media center whose main projects are DCTV Channel 15 on the Comcast cable system - public access television; Educational Access Channel 17 on the Comcast cable system; and KDRT-LP, 95.7 FM, Low-power community radio.

"Sometimes, you just need to take the show on the road," said Jeff Shaw, DMA's production manager. "We've been doing a lot of outreach in Yolo County as part of a grant we're working on. With summer starting and a kids' video contest launching, our local library seemed like a great place to meet with community members and do an orientation."

Shaw will team-teach the session with Autumn Labbe-Renault, DMA's executive together. Topics covered will include:

-Overview of DMA’s services, including digital equipment, media training, low-power FM radio, youth media projects, local studio productions, event coverage, and advocacy and information for broader media issues.

-Overview of DMA’s consumer advocacy work through a grant from the CA Consumer Education Foundation. Learn how seniors and low-income residents are especially at risk by practices unfair to consumers. Information provided about understanding cell phone pre-paid plans and charges; how to get information about important money-saving programs; and where and how to file a complaint. DMA will provide handouts about these issues in both English and Spanish.

-Information about DMA’s summer video contests, one for youth in grades 4-8, and another for teens in grades 9-12. Participants will learn basic production, have access to equipment, and craft pieces around the cell phone advocacy issues described above. Cash prizes are $250 and $100 for each age group.
