A note from the Executive Director

My mantra as I talk to folks about Davis Media Access is "DMA builds community." The more we know about each other, the better informed and more compassionate we'll be. It's the touchstone I return to, and it's what keeps me doing this work. This newsletter brings you information about local election coverage; digital literacy opportunities for kids; capacity-building grants for our community; and a host of programs designed to educate, entertain and connect us. Thank you for reading, and for your participation and support. Please help spread the word about the good news that's DMA!

I would also like to announce that Ron Clement has been seated as the new Chair of the DMA Board of Directors. Ron has served on the board for two years and brings with him a wealth of experience in non-profit and foundation management. We thank him very much for taking up this mantle.

DMA highlights both sides of Measure C

DMA invited the Yes on Measure C and the No on Measure C campaigns into the studio in January to record brief campaign statements. The resulting short programs will air on DCTV Channel 15 on the Comcast system, Menu 99 on AT&T’s U-verse, and on KDRT 95.7 FM . The segments are also hosted online, and DMA also provides each campaign with embed codes for their websites.  

Coverage of local elections is core to DMA’s mission of creating community through media, and a partnership benefit we offer to our City and community. We’ve been proud to offer this free community service for more than 23 years. Schedules and links are available here.

Registration open for summer kids' camps

Davis Media Access (DMA) announces open registration for its popular summer 'KidsVid' Video Camp and Kids Animation Camp. DMA will offer two KidsVid camp sessions this summer, as well two sessions of Animation Camp.

KidsVid Video Camp is a one-week session in media production for youth ages 10-13. Participants will learn how to produce a program in DMA's television studio, including storyboarding, operating cameras and sound equipment, and media literacy training. They will also get an introduction to the radio booth at KDRT 95.7 FM, DMA's low-power community radio station. Each class is limited to 8 participants.

During Animation Camp, participants will learn how to plan and storyboard an animation, record dialogue and effects, and light and create stop-motion animations, as well as experiment with 2D animation and watch examples of various styles for inspiration. Each class is limited to 6 participants.

Next orientation Feb. 21

DMA applied to the Community Technology Empowerment Project (CTEP) for the upcoming 2012-2013 service year and has tentatively been approved to host one member beginning in October.  CTEP is part of the Americorps program, with members focused on  teaching technology literacy for social, civic, and economic empowerment. Our Americorps member's efforts will focus on developing after-school programs in digital literacy for at-risk youth. DMA was invited to apply to the program as part of CTEP's targeted expansion in the larger Bay Area. We are very pleased to be able to bring this type of capacity building to our community.

In the Studio resumes regular production

During DMA's renovation of the old television studio, we had to suspend production of "In the Studio," but we're happy to report ITS is back. The program provides local newsmakers and community organizations with easy ways to promote their activities and events. DMA producers four segments of ITS each month, using the recording sessions as a hands-on learning lab for local residents interested in media production. ITS airs Tuesdays, Wedensdays and Sundays at 7 p.m. on DCTV, Comcast Channel 15, and on demand at Menu 99 on AT&T's U-verse. Episodes are also archived at dctv.davismedia.org.

Episode 200 "New Studio" features an overview of the new HD TV studio. Hosted by Ron Clement, the segment features several DMA staff members. The episode has been airing and has a final air date of Sunday, Feb. 12.

Episode 201, "We Saved the Domes" is hosted by Ashley Woodbury and airs Feb. 14, 15 and 19.

Episode 202, "Here is a Human Being," features discussion of the Big Read and the topic of personal genomics. Hosted by Jay Johnstone, the episode airs Feb. 21, 22 and 26.

Episode 203, "Free Range Singers," highlights this innovative community chorus. Hosted by Autumn Labbe-Renault, the episode airs Feb. 28, 29 and March 4.

Other Program Notes

• In January, DMA recorded the City's presentation of the annual tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. The program features the Patwin Elementary Chorus, Mayor Joe Krovoza, Keynote Speaker Lecia Brooks of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and much more. The video is available here.
• Channel 17 has had to make some schedule revisions due to sweeping changes in how some satellite programs are made available to us. On the local front, Board meetings of the Davis Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees can be watched here and replays, here. DJUSD interns are currently helping to record boys' and girls' high school basketball, and recently recorded Davis High Idol. Upcoming shoots include Tartuffe, presented by the Davis High Department of Drama, the All-District Choirs Concert, and the Orchestra Children's Concert.
• KDRT volunteers have been busy updating the program schedule, and welcomed some new shows into the fold. Check out "Empire Radio," Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m., Mele O Hawaii Thursdays at 10 a.m., and The Chambers Street Theatre, Thursdays at 11 a.m.
• Sadly, we bid adieu to Mountain Mama's Earth Music Hour. Host Nancy Bodily and her family are moving to San Luis Obispo. Nancy has been a longtime and devoted participant and supporter of community media, and most recently served as DMA"s Board Chair. Words cannot express how much she will be missed, but we wish her all the best!
