“Canada’s Tar Sands are perhaps the most visually compelling example of all that is wrong with our addiction to fossil fuels and why we must change or face dire consequences for all life on Earth,”Garth Lenz states in his award-winning slideshow talk, The True Cost of Oil: Images of Beauty and Devastation.
Garth Lenz, a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers, is an internationally published, environmental photojournalist best known for his work presenting environmental and social justice issues. He has photographed extensively throughout Canada’s temperate rainforest and boreal forests, gathering images of the plight of the pristine Canadian boreal region and its people now confronted by a vast industrial project. The Alberta Tar Sands are the third largest, most carbon- intensive old reserves on the planet, and their exploitation is a global threat.
Lenz will present The True Cost of Oil at 7p.m., Monday, January 14 at the United Methodist Church of Davis (1620 Anderson Road). Hosted by Cool Davis, the suggested donation for Lenz’ public presentation is $20 at the door; students are free. Save the Date - Soroptimist International of Davis--Texas Hold ‘Em Night
Think fast-paced poker games, fabulous food, lots of fun and good works to boot, and what do you get? It’s Soroptimist International of Davis’ annual Texas Hold ’Em Night fundraiser, Saturday, March 23, 2013. The event is at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall, 415 Second St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tournament play starts promptly at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 each for tournament play and $40 each for “Greenhorn,” non-tournament tables. To go along with the theme, Western wear is encouraged.
Soroptimist International of Davis is a group of business and professional women who donate their time and resources to provide service to others. Over the past few years, much of that support has centered on the emancipated foster youth program. The funds will help pay college tuition, living expenses, clothing for job interviews, transportation, and other items needed to support young adults’ transition from status as a foster child to becoming a productive adult member of the community.
